Laundry tracker for shared houses: know if the washer is free

Updated

Short answer

Put a QR label (or an optional NFC sticker) on each washer and dryer. Anyone in the house scans it to start a load, the whole house sees the machine as in use with time left, the owner of the load is told when it finishes, and anyone waiting is told when it's free. hausync does this in the browser, with no app store install.

Every shared house has the same laundry problem. You carry a full basket down, and the washer is busy, or a finished load has been sitting in the dryer since this morning and nobody knows whose it is. Apartment buildings and dorms solve this with connected machines and a laundry app from the operator. A shared house doesn't have that. It has two or three ordinary machines and a group chat nobody reads.

A laundry tracker for a shared house doesn't need connected machines. It needs one fast way for people to say "this is mine, it finishes at 4:10" and one place where everyone can see it.

How hausync tracks the machines in your house

  1. Add your machines. The house owner adds each washer and dryer (W1, W2, D1…) with its usual cycle length, and can attach a machine to one floor or the whole house.
  2. Print the labels. hausync makes a label per machine with the name in big letters and a QR code. Stick it on the lid at eye level. If you like, add an NFC sticker that holds the same link. NFC is optional, the QR code works on every phone.
  3. Scan to start. Scanning the label opens that machine. Tap start, adjust the minutes if this load is shorter or longer, and the machine shows as in use for the whole house, with whose load it is and the time left.
  4. Get told when it's done. When the cycle ends, the person whose load it is gets a message, and one reminder 20 minutes later if it's still sitting there.
  5. Wait list. Machine busy? Join its wait list and you're told when it's free.

The home screen shows every machine as free, in use, or done at a glance, so you can check from your room before you carry anything anywhere.

What happens when someone forgets to collect

If a load is done and you need the machine, tap I moved it out and start yours. The owner of the load is told who moved it, so nothing gets awkward and nobody's clothes go missing without an explanation. Making the habit stick

A tracker only works if people use it, and in most houses one or two people start using it before everyone else does. Things that help:

The laundry tracker sits next to everything else a shared house needs, so it's not one more app to install: chores that rotate, bills split between the people involved, house chat, and a shared calendar.

Questions people ask

Do I need special hardware to track laundry machines?

No. hausync prints a label with a QR code for each machine, and any phone camera opens it. An NFC sticker is optional and holds the same link. Nothing is wired into the machine; people tap the label when they start or collect a load.

What happens if someone forgets to mark their load?

The tracker is only as good as the habit, so make the label the easiest thing in the room: stick it at eye level on the lid, and agree as a house that an unmarked machine counts as free. Anyone can mark a finished load as moved out and start their own, and the owner is told who moved it.

Can I get notified when the washer is free?

Yes. If a machine is in use you can join its wait list, and you're told when it is free. The person whose load it is gets a message when the cycle ends and one reminder if the clothes are still sitting there 20 minutes later.

Does it work for a house with laundry on more than one floor?

Yes. Machines can belong to the whole house or to one floor, and each floor only sees its own machines plus the shared ones.
