hausync vs Flatastic: two shared-house apps, compared honestly
Updated
Short answer
Both cover chores, shopping lists and shared expenses. Flatastic has native apps, a free version with ads, a chore score, and Premium extras like CSV export and images on expenses. hausync adds private expenses (only the people in one see it), house and floor chat, laundry machine status, per-floor quiet hours and recurring bills, for one subscription per house after 14 days free.
Disclosure: hausync is our app. Flatastic is the closest thing to hausync among the established apps: a long-running household app for flatshares with chores, a shopping list, shared expenses, and a pinboard. If you're choosing between the two, the differences are in the details, so this page goes through them honestly, including where Flatastic is ahead.
What Flatastic does
From its own site and App Store listing: Flatastic has a cleaning schedule that rotates chores and reminds people, with a score system that tracks how much each person has done. Its shopping list is shared, suggests items you buy often, and supports several lists. The expenses section records who paid for what and who owes whom. A pinboard holds notes, updates, and plans. It's on the App Store and Google Play, and its site links to a web app.
Flatastic is free to download with ads, and Premium removes ads and restrictions. Premium adds cleaning history and notes on chores, an archive of past budget breakdowns, personal expense tracking, CSV export of financial entries, images on expenses, and more shopping-list features. On the US App Store, Premium for one person is $1.99 a month or $18.49 a year, and Premium for everybody in the flat is $6.49 a month or $34.99 a year.

When Flatastic is the better pick
- Budget. Flatastic has a free version, and Premium for the whole flat costs less per year than hausync's house plan.
- You want native apps. Flatastic is in both app stores. hausync is a web app you add to your home screen.
- You need your money data out. Flatastic Premium exports financial entries as CSV and lets you attach images to expenses. hausync has neither.
- A score helps your flat. If seeing who did how much keeps people honest, Flatastic has it and hausync doesn't.
When hausync is the better pick
- Money privacy. In hausync, an expense is visible only to the people who paid or share in it, and balances are kept between each pair of housemates rather than as a house-wide table. Nobody, including the house owner, can open an expense they aren't part of.
- Talking, not just posting. A House channel, a channel per floor, groups, and direct messages that only the two people in them can read.
- Shared washers and dryers. Each machine gets a printable QR label. Scan it to start a load, everyone sees how long is left, and anyone waiting is told when it's free. See the laundry tracker.
- Big or multi-floor houses. Chores can rotate between floors, each floor sets its own quiet hours, and floor things stay with that floor. See hausync for multi-unit houses.
- Recurring bills. Rent or internet can be set once with a day of the month; on that day it's added as an expense split between the people on it.
What hausync doesn't do
- No free plan: 14 days free, then one subscription per house.
- No native app store app.
- No CSV export of expenses, no receipt photos on expenses, no receipt scanning.
- No chore scores or leaderboards.
- No importing from Flatastic.
- It doesn't move money. Pay opens a housemate's saved Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, or Zelle; you pay there.
Switching from Flatastic
Settle up in Flatastic first, so everyone starts at zero. Then create the house in hausync, add the chores again (or use the quick-start presets), recreate your shopping lists, and send the invite link to the house. Most houses can do this in one evening.
